TDN Rising Star Newgate (Into Mischief–Majestic Presence, by Majestic Warrior) will stand at Three Chimneys upon his retirement, according to a farm release Wednesday. The winner of this season's GI Santa Anita Handicap is scheduled to make a start in the $7-million GI Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar next month.
An $850,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, the bay is campaigned by SF Racing LLC, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables LLC, Robert E. Masterson, Stonestreet Stables LLC, Jay A. Schoenfarber, Waves Edge Capital LLC and Catherine Donovan.
Newgate, a first out winner at Del Mar in 2022, later captured the GIII Robert B. Lewis Stakes in a field which included eventual Grade I winner Arabian Lion.
Earlier this season, he won the Big 'Cap against a field which included GI Pacific Classic winner Mixto, GI Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Highland Falls and GI California Crown scorer Subsanador.
In his most recent start in the California Crown, Newgate posted a 122 Equibase Speed Figure, in a blanket finish, beaten a head by Subsanador.
“Newgate was exceptional from the very beginning of his career,” said SF's Tom Ryan. “He demonstrated impressive precocity as a 2-year-old, breaking his maiden as a TDN 'Rising Star' at Del Mar. At 3, Newgate showcased his elite ability in the one 1/16-mile Bob Lewis, winning with an impressive 100 Beyer, and we believed we had a real Derby contender. However, a setback sidelined our dreams and delayed his return until 2024. He has returned bigger, stronger, and faster, winning a very competitive renewal of the Santa Anita Handicap. He finished an eye-catching third, beaten a head, in the California Crown.”
Ryan continued, “Newgate is a majestic physical with speed that can carry him a long way. He's always been one of the most stunning colts in Bob's shedrow, and that's a very difficult feat. SF looks forward to continuing our association with Newgate at Three Chimneys.”
Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert added, “Newgate is a magnificent looking horse. He's an absolute standout who was very talented on the racetrack. Rarely do you see a horse with the speed and precocity to win first out early in its 2-year-old year going 5 1/2 then be able to win a Grade I at a mile and quarter as an older horse. He's by the right sire and he's going to the farm that stands Gun Runner.”
Bred by Town & Country Horse Farms, the Kentucky bred won or placed in six graded/Grade I stakes, including the GII San Pasqual, the GIII Bob Hope and the GII Sham Stakes.
He hails from an active female family. His full-sister Denim and Pearls won the GII Beaumont Stakes earlier this year at Keeneland.
Three Chimneys' Gonçalo Torrealba said, “We are excited to have such an impressive colt from Bob Baffert's barn coming to Three Chimneys for the 2025 breeding season. Impeccably bred Grade I winners are hard to get, and to have SF and Stonestreet staying involved in his next career with us means a lot. There are not any better endorsements than that. Three Chimneys couldn't be happier to offer breeders such an outstanding son of Into Mischief.”
